Watch and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation. Mt 26:41.
The Two Oceans Marathon is a very popular road race in Cape Town. Some years ago it took place in particularly wet conditions. The rain just poured down. At the end of the race, the route turns onto a grass field, past two bends and then onto the final straight to the finish line. That particular year, with all the rain, one large patch of the grass, just past the second bend, had become quite soggy, and after a few thousand runners had gone past it was just mud. Thick, brown, slippery mud. A number of runners just didn’t see it in time and ended up with a head to toe mud-pack.
Some sins are like that, it all happens to fast you just don’t see it coming. Before you know it, you have slipped, and fallen. In this case, that word, that thought, that action are almost automatic and almost always sinful. It happened to Peter (Matthew 26:69 – 75), and let’s be honest, it’s happened to you and me.
So what are we to do about it? Two things, firstly, preparation. Be watchful and prayerful in your spiritual life. Be on the lookout for difficult situations, and be often in prayer. That was the teaching of Jesus to the Disciples. And secondly, if we do fall, remember that there is a way back to God through Jesus Christ. “If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:8.
