Here’s something to turn over in your mind this week.
Against the Crowd
Do not be conformed to this world. Romans 12:2.
I used to live in Cape Town, South Africa and one day Iwas on my way back from the centre of the City and was about to walk across Cape Town Station towards my office when I met a large crowd going the other way. A number of trains had arrived at the same time and I was caught up trying to make my way through the bustling people.
As I picked my way through the busy station I was reminded that this is very similar to the Christian life. The people of the world are going in one direction and the Christian is called to go in another. Frequently, that means that we will have to walk against the crowd. It’s lonely and progress can be slow. Sometimes, we are tempted to turn around and follow the easy path.
But no, that is not the Lord’s will for us. Our behaviour, our morals and ethics, our lives are driven by motives and principles very different to most of the people around us. So much of life in this world is material, temporary and passing. We are looking towards the eternal life in Christ which is future, secure and eternal. That very concept affects deeply the way we think and act. We are not of this world, we are of the world that is to come.
